Confirmations at Mighty Fortress

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.” –Psalm 111:10

Confirmation instruction is intended to teach the basic tenets of the Christian faith to those desiring communicant membership in our congregation.  At Mighty Fortress, we have two different programs—one for youth, and one for adults.

YOUTH CONFIRMATION

This program is a two-year program geared for youth in school grades 7 and 8.  Along with the Bible, we use Luther’s Small Catechism as a guide to teach the Biblical fundamentals of Christianity.  The Catechism is divided into six chief parts:

1)The Ten Commandments, which are a detailed presentation of God’s moral law, and what the God-pleasing thing is in our relationship to him, and to other human beings (loving God and loving our neighbor).

2)The Apostles’ Creed, divided into three articles.  The first article explains God the Father and creation; the second article explains God the Son—Jesus Christ; and the third article explains God the Holy Spirit.

3)The Sacrament of Baptism.

4)The Sacrament of the Altar, also called “The Lord’s Supper,” “Holy Communion,” “The Lord’s Table,” or “The Eucharist.”

5)Confession and the Office of the Keys.  We confess our sins, and are assured of the full and free forgiveness of our sins by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord of our life.

6)The Lord’s Prayer.  Just as God speaks to us through the Bible, we are to communicate with him through prayer.

We teach the catechism in a two-year curriculum, consisting of 28 lessons each year.  We go through the catechism twice during this time; the first year at a beginning level, and the second year at an advanced level.  The children are assigned homework each week, and then are examined before being confirmed and entering into the church’s communicant membership.

If you have children of confirmation age, please contact the Pastor so your child can be enrolled in these classes.

ADULT CONFIRMATION

Adults as well as children need to know the fundamentals of the Christian faith. For adults, we have a series of Bible Information Classes, or “BIC.”  Participation in this class is beneficial even for those who have been life-long members of the church, so they are open for all to attend.  These classes are divided into 20 Bible study type sessions, with each session lasting between 60 and 90 minutes.  They are not only informative, but fun too!

We recognize that adults have had varying degrees of prior training; therefore the necessary instruction for each adult desiring communicant membership in the church is determined on an individual basis.  Please direct any questions you might have to the Pastor.
